Erford E. Keeler Jr.

Corning, NY - Erford "Sonny" E. Keeler Jr, 89, of Corning, NY, passed away Sunday, December 23, 2018, at Corning Hospital.

Sonny was born December 23, 1929 in Corning, the son of Erford "Pat" and Ethel Mapes Smith Keeler Sr.

He was married to Constance (Reed) Keeler for 60 years. She predeceased him August 11, 2010.

He is survived by their children: Dana of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; Allan (Chris) of Crossville, TN; Cathie (Jim) Jacobus of Horseheads; Steve (Reegan) of Corning; and Tom of Corning. He had six grandchildren: Jamie, Abby, Danny, Andrew, Matthew, Whitney and great-grandchild, Rocco.

Sonny owned and operated Keeler Construction Company and built, repaired & restored many building and structures (schools, warehouses, banks, office and factory buildings) through out the region.  He was involved in the restoration of many buildings on Market Street, Corning notably the rebuilding of the landmark building Sorge’s  Restaurant.  He was honored for his contributions receiving the PAN Award from the Market Street Restoration Agency.

Sonny’s life also contained many contributions to the community.  He was instrumental in the development and growth of the Gibson Volunteer Fire Department serving as a member and later as a Fire Commissioner.  He was actively involved in activities in the Town of Corning, establishing the Gibson Water District, and served on several boards. In the 1980's he was elected as a Steuben County Supervisor serving on its planning board committee.

To the family, he was as determined and decisive as he had always been to “do things my way.” His sense of humor and the twinkle in those blue eyes greeted us most days. The family would like to offer their sincere thanks for those who provided so much help, comfort and care in his final years.  Visits from former employees and friends was also much appreciated.
