With heavy hearts but unwavering faith in God’s promise, Herman Lee Mattox, 76, of Corning, New York, was called home to eternal rest unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.
Born in Elberton, Georgia, to Clyde and Symatti Mattox, Herman was raised with Southern values, deep faith, and a strong sense of family. Those roots never left him. No matter where life took him, he carried himself with pride, dignity, and the strength of a God-fearing man.
Herman gave over 40 faithful years of service to Corning Incorporated. He worked in glass production and later as a Facilities Technician, taking great pride in everything he did. To him, no job was small. If his name was attached to it, it was going to be done right. He believed in hard work, standing on your word, and earning respect through consistency and dedication.
He loved the Lord. His faith was personal and powerful. Herman was the kind of man who believed God was in control, no matter the season. He wasn’t perfect, but he was real. And he loved God in his own steadfast way.
Herman was funny, bold, and straight to the point. He told it like it was, no sugarcoating, no pretending. What you saw was what you got. But underneath that tough, straightforward exterior was a heart full of love. If he cared about you, he cared deeply. He was loyal to the core. Protective. Giving. The kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation.
He loved life. He enjoyed spending time at the casinos, feeling the thrill of the game and the excitement of the moment. He enjoyed laughter, conversation, and living freely. He moved through life unapologetically, on his terms.
Above all, Herman loved his family. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted daughter, Angela, and son-in-law, Sunny Goins of North Carolina; his brothers, James Cade of New York, Mark (Mary Ann) McMillan of South Carolina, Willie Mattox of New York, and Donnell Brunner of Georgia; and his sisters, Elecia (Carlton) Bradley of Georgia, Janet Mattox of Florida, and Lenora Brown of Georgia.
He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren Rashelle, Sunneyah, and Jasunney; his treasured great-grandchildren Trevion, Jaecion, Zola, Caua, Kayne, Storm, Izmahni, and Amoura; along with many nieces and nephews who will continue to carry his legacy forward.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Wayne McMillan and Floyd Mattox; his sister, Shirley Mattox; and his only grandson, Rahmel Baptist.
Herman was a teacher for life. Through his strength, his honesty, and his unwavering spirit, he taught those around him how to stand tall, speak truth, work hard, love fiercely, and keep God first.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. His work here is done. His race has been run.
The family will receive friends at a reception on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 2-6 p.m. at the Corning American Legion, 8 River Road, Corning, NY.
Sleep well, Daddy. You fought your fight. You lived your life. And your legacy will live on in us.
